Currents : EMF Recordings #1

€19.95

is the first release in a series of electromagnetic field-recording (EMF) Sound Packs. It contains recordings from a broad variety of sources. Contact mics have been attached to hard-drives; working and faulty ones. But also in- and onto computers, handheld devices, laptops, remote controls and broken household electronics. So there’s a lot of static noises, bleeps, clicks, cycles and glitches. All recorded at 96 kHz and 24 bit.

To add more unique sounds to this pack, recordings have been made using the SOMA Laboratory ETHER V2 wide-band receiver. Hours of electromagnetic landscapes have been recorded and only the most interesting material made it into this pack.

Moving around or shaking the drives and devices while being powered on or off, created interesting patterns and noises. Some of the faulty discs already made pretty interesting noises themselves but you could actually hear added despair when strong magnets were brought into proximity.

Currents is suitable for artists creating music in experimental genres, game audio or post-production jobs that need raw, digital sounds. Or for anyone that wants to experiment with feeding weird source material into granular synths or IR loaders.

The pack is divided into two different folders: and . The 200 sounds in the Source folder are raw recordings, with a minimal amount of cleaning and no processing with effects. Loudness kept at the EBU R-128 standard. The intent was capturing the electromagnetic fields and currents passing through items, as accurately as possible. Resulting in a really rough and versatile set of sounds.

In the Designed folder you’ll find 100 carefully crafted and manipulated sounds. All made with sounds from the SOURCE folder by layering and stretching them. Send through large effect chains and use techniques like frequency shifting.

You can create your own sounds by loading the content found of both folders into your favorite granular and wavetable synth. Or load them into plugins like Glitchmachines Polygon, stack and alter them into your favorite DAW or sampler.

Maybe needless to say, but this pack contains harsh sounds, please adjust volume levels accordingly.
